In 2017 Peterhead Baptist Church started an ambitious building project which would join the church in King Street Peterhead with the adjoining property which had been purchased several years previously. The building project created a new space for the congregation to meet as well as a complete refit and remodel of the existing sanctuary.
As part of the refit, the church took the opportunity to upgrade the infrastructure supporting the audio visual systems. The design and implementation of the new systems was completed by Alexander and Olivia.
Alexander and Olivia were heavily involved during the construction phase, working closely with the appointed construction company KW Contractors.
Infrastructure Installation
The church had already made the switch to digital audio equipment, which was reinstalled in the refurbished building. Around 60 individual Cat6 cores, 15 SDI cores and 20 audio pairs were installed to support the various different systems. This supports the sound systems, including in-ear monitoring, IP Based systems for internet and control of projection systems, distribution of video and access control.
Before the new floor and underfloor heating was installed, multi compartment trunking was installed which allows cabling and infrastructure to be routed around any part of the sanctuary and the hub, with access to the trunking via floor boxes. Each floor box on the stage is loaded with XLR, CAT6 and Mains outlets. The trunking also allows for routing of video through to any other point.
The loop systems are installed in each of the main areas using flat copper tape which is installed between the concrete floor and the floor covering.
Audio Visual Installation
The main sanctuary is kitted out with a Behringer X32, with an S16 digital snake, which provides 16 inputs from the stage, in addition to 4 radio microphones and 2 microphones for the congregation. A pair of Bose F1 line arrays with subwoofers provide the main sound. A loop amplifier assists those who are hard of hearing to be involved fully in the services. A range of microphones and DI boxes are used for the standard band setup. In addition, inputs from computers are used for playback from a variety of sources.
There are outputs from the main sound console that support mp3 recording for the church’s website, their live stream on youtube and CD recordings. Outputs are also sent to the adjoining rooms.
The newly constructed hub included installation of 4 Bose speakers, along with a small mixer allowing smaller events to be held in the Hub with background music, as well as up to 8 inputs, including DI boxes and microphones. The Hub is also fitted with an induction loop for those who are hard of hearing.
Lighting
A 9m bar of LED lamps was installed at the rear of the stage, with DMX control allowing for subtle colour washes on the lower section of the wall. This also allows for colour changing chases for children’s events.
DALI dimming
Lighting in the main sanctuary and hub are controlled by a DALI control system, which allows individual control of every lamp individually using simple control panels. These panels allow for preset scenes to be recalled allowing for subtle changes to the lighting to support the needs of the users in the building. For example, the ability to fade the main sanctuary lights during a video presentation is effortless and does not cause distraction.
Projectors and Visuals
During the refit new projector mounts, cabling and screens were installed. A 2.4m wide electronic screen was fitted at the front of the sanctuary, which is automatically controlled by the projector.
All video feeds throughout the building are connected using SDI over coax which allows full HD 1080p video to be transmitted over long distances.
Each projector in the main sanctuary can switch between multiple inputs to allow worship lyrics, pre-recorded videos and presentations, as well as live video to be shown.
Video Streaming
Four remote controlled Sony HD Cameras are installed in the sanctuary allowing the camera operator to control the shots, as well as providing a live video mix using vmix software. Services on Sunday’s are streamed live on youtube allowing those who cannot attend, it also allows for others to watch again later.
Access Control Systems
We specified and configured an access control system which is the main method of access to the building. The system allows for individual access to be granted based on the day of the week, and the time of the day. Should a key be misplaced, it can be disabled simply. The system logging allows for tracking entry and exit from the building.
Training
Training for the installed systems was also completed, with information appropriate to the teams at PBC. Training included the use of the newly installed equipment, as well as information on how the systems were designed and installed.
